MOTIVATIONAL INTERVIEWING
The Need | The Community Health Care Association of New York State (CHCANYS) is New York's Primary Care Association, a membership organization representing New York’s 70-plus community health centers. Health centers provide care for 1-in-9 New Yorkers at more than 800 locations across the state. CHCANYS provides training and technical assistance to New York’s health centers in areas including clinical quality improvement, emergency management, data and technology, workforce development, and compliance and operations. They received funding to support health centers to hire, train, and integrate community health workers (CHWs). They discovered that motivational interviewing was a high-priority training topic when they polled their advisory group.
The Approach | The CHCANYS team heard from health centers that competing priorities make it hard for staff to attend live trainings. Ariel created a series of motivational interviewing training videos for CHCANYS to share on their Learning Management System so that health center CHWs can watch the videos and learn about MI at their own convenience.
The Outcomes | Ariel worked with the CHCANYS team to identify their priority focus areas for the training videos. Ariel also got their input to develop a patient scenario that would feel realistic and relevant for CHWs in New York. She used the patient scenario to illustrate key concepts and skills of motivational interviewing.
The Learnings | Motivational interviewing is simple, but not easy. Creating a clear, comprehensible, and compelling introduction can be challenging. By introducing the core ideas and illustrating how they can sound in practice, sharing an individual patient story can help bring the concepts and ideas to life.
