Hybrid Workshop on Person-Centered Health-Related Social Needs Screening

Indiana Hospital Association

COLLABORATIVE SCREENING

The Need | In their work reducing infant mortality and promoting quality improvement for Medicare beneficiaries, the Indiana Hospital Association (IHA) supports their critical access, rural hospitals, and other rural health care providers with a variety of quality improvement strategies.  IHA is helping their members implement screening and follow-up for health-related social needs, and IHA staff have been hearing that a lot of people feel uncomfortable asking these sensitive questions.

The Approach | Ariel has been working with IHA to provide trainings on person-centered screening for a few years, and we have experimented with different formats.  We have all been pleased with using a hybrid format for these trainings, where we gather with people in-person to practice communication skills and then reconvene online to talk about system design. We partnered to develop case studies that are appropriate for the hospital teams attending the hybrid workshop, and gave people a lot of time to interact and ask questions.

The Outcomes | When asked how valuable the workshop was, participants gave an average rating of 9.5 out of 10 for the in-person workshop and 9 out of 10 for our follow-up online.  What people liked best about it:

“That I have a new way of helping my patients feel safe with me. That it’s ok not to be able to fix every patient.”

“Multiple learning and teaching styles”

“I loved that it was very interactive and we were practicing what we were learning.”

“Knowledgeable instructor, fun learning techniques, can’t wait to share with my co-workers.”

The Learnings | The more we work in different states, the more we learn that people all over the country are struggling with the same challenges, and the same desire to help their communities.  We have also concluded that a hybrid format works really well for this type of training! People really value being together face-to-face to learn and practice communication skills, and the follow-up online is more comfortable because the cohort has met in person.
