Online Learning for Health-Related Social Needs Screening

Kaiser Permanente National Social Health

COLLABORATIVE SCREENING

The Need |  Kaiser Permanente is one of the nation’s largest not-for-profit health plans, serving 12.5 million members. Nationwide, Kaiser Permanente is working to better understand and respond to members’ nonmedical needs in order to support total health.  To accomplish this goal, Kaiser Permanente care teams and staff across the country are learning  to screen and respond to nonmedical social needs.  KP Learn is the Kaiser Permanente enterprise-wide Learning Management System, providing employees, physicians, and contingent workers with online access to learning resources.

The Approach | Ariel partnered with the KP Learn instructional design team to develop an online learning module on health-related social needs screening.  She served as a subject matter expert on the team, and contributed to developing the overall course design, key content areas, and learning activities.

The Outcomes | Ariel worked closely with the instructional design team to develop a course that would feel useful to the diverse KP workforce.  Using storytelling and case studies, the team worked to make the course relevant and actionable.

The Learnings | This was another project where the success really came down to the power of the team. The instructional designer leading this project used a wonderful guiding style to facilitate an efficient and effective course development process.  She always put users at the center, and we worked together as an interdisciplinary team to develop and deliver a high-quality, on-time self-paced learning module.
